But to a Pacific salmon desperately trying to swim upriver to their native spawning beds, it&#8217;s often a dead stop to their trip home.<\/p>\n<p>There are 170,000 road crossings at streams containing fish habitat in B.C.. Of these, about 92,000 are culverts that block fish passage. These need to be repaired.<\/p>\n<p>But for several B.C. streams, this is no longer true. The Canadian Wildlife Federation is pleased to <a href=\"http:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/news\/releases\/2020\/broad-scale-efforts-underway.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announce<\/a> the removal of multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/fish-passage\/breaking-down-barriers.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">barriers to fish passage in B.C<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMany Pacific salmon and trout populations are in dire straits. By removing some of the barriers to migration and restoring connections to historical habitats these species have a better chance of survival. Our cultures, economies and ecosystems depend on the sustainability of wild fish stocks and it is our shared responsibility to scale up efforts to fix past harm.\u201d<br \/>\n~<em>Nicolas Lapointe, CWF Senior Conservation Biologist Freshwater Ecology<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We are working with diverse partners to restore access to critical spawning and rearing habitats for aquatic species at risk, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/salmon\/?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pacific salmon<\/a>, Westslope Cutthroat Trout and Steelhead.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/research-papers\/Eng_Backgrounder_2020Projects.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eight projects nearing completion<\/a> and an additional 10 projects in the review stage. The projects are spread across the province including Vancouver Island, the coastal mainland, the Fraser River watershed and the Columbia basin.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1fCsRBcSSKu2fQ-wsuu_HVoy3TvKFDCMW\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Each location has a customized solution. In some cases, clearspan bridges replace closed-bottom or raised culverts. In other cases, fish ladders are the best solution.<\/p>\n<p>Several projects are funded under the <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/about-cwf\/corporate-partnerships\/companies\/bcsrif.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund<\/a>, which is a 70 per cent federal, 30 per cent provincial cost-shared program. Additional projects are supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca\/species-especes\/sara-lep\/cnfasar-fnceap\/overview\/index-eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8877\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8877\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-standard wp-image-8877\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/1013515-newly-constructed-channel-1100x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newly constructed channel on the Burman River Project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The projects repair historical harm to salmon and trout habitat from past construction of roads and railways across spawning and rearing streams. Many of these barriers were created prior to legislation protecting fish habitats. Local conservation organizations and provincial government agencies are among those involved in the restorations.<\/p>\n<p>The species populations supported by this project include Sockeye Salmon, Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon, and Pink Salmon as well as Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Steelhead and Bull Trout.
