Fish-focused Activities for Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>School may be drawing to a close later this month, but as a parent or teacher, you can still make a splash at home with these fish-focused learning activities!<\/h2>\n<p>Kids will learn about Canada\u2019s underwater wildlife, tag along with a real-life biologist conducting research on fish migration, and discover how they can take personal action to support species like the Chinook Salmon and American Eel.<br \/>\n<a name=\"watch\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Watch<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>See firsthand what it takes to be a wildlife biologist! Check out the educational resources below!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/fish-ways\/fish-stories.html\">Fish Stories<\/a> \u2013 Through this activity, kids will listen to and share stories about fish and learn about the similarities and differences between humans and fish.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/archive\/fish-and-fisheries\/fish-ways-sask\/fish-fate.html\">Fish fate<\/a> \u2013 With this interactive board game kids, explore factors that can affect fish populations and use math skills to track population fluctuations.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/net-gain-net-effect.html\">Net Gain, Net Effect<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Using different sizes of mesh netting, kids will learn about the impact of commercial fishing practices through this hands-on activity.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/river-barriers\/?src=LR\">Overcoming Barriers<\/a> \u2013 Learn about some of the barriers fish face on their migratory journeys and the negative impact these barriers have on fish populations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"do\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Do<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"tkfeatureimage aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/assets\/images\/eel-chinook-760.png\" alt=\"eel and chinook in water\" width=\"466\" height=\"466\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No matter where you live in Canada, you can make a difference for fish! Lend your support to two Threatened fish species \u2013 Chinook Salmon and American Eels \u2013 by taking personal action at the grocery store and advocating for their conservation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/news\/articles\/permission-to-shop.html\">Avoid Eating Farmed Salmon<\/a> &#8211; Take a stand against open-pen finfish aquaculture, which can threaten native populations of fish and other wildlife, by learning what to buy at the grocery store.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/eels\/letter.html\">Appeal for Eels<\/a> \u2013 Urge government to help the American Eel by signing CWF\u2019s appeal.<strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"outside\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Get Outside<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-standard wp-image-7738\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/boys-kids-creek-river-outside-1094732120-1100x640.jpg\" alt=\"boys playin in creek\" width=\"1100\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking for simple ways to get your kids outside? These fish-focused activities will help them get active and unleash their creativity at-home and in their community.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create your own fish ladder!<\/strong> Set three to four hula-hoops or beach towels on the ground. Explain to the kids that these are steps on a fish ladder, and they must jump from one to the next to successfully travel upstream.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set up a fishy scavenger hunt!<\/strong> Have kids draw and colour several different fish, then collect and hide them outside in a designated area.
