Well, you don\u2019t have to \u201cwing\u201d it!<\/h2>\n<p>In celebration of World Migratory Bird Day on May 9, we\u2019ve put together another set of videos, activities and DIY projects to help you learn more about our feathered friends and take action to support their conservation.<a name=\"watch\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Watch<\/h3>\n<p>In 1917, Canada signed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hww.ca\/en\/issues-and-topics\/centennial-of-migratory-birds-convention.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Migratory Birds Convention Act<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a\u00a0law to protect\u00a0migratory birds from\u00a0hunting,\u00a0trafficking\u00a0and commercialization. Practice your observational skills by learning about basic bird features, identify some of the bird species that live in your area, and map their migratory journeys!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/educational-units\/give-backyard-birds-something-to-sing-about\/Images\/img5.png\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/wingy-about-birds.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wingy About Birds<\/a> \u2013 Develop your observation skills by learning to recognize basic bird behaviours and characteristics!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/home-on-the-range.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Home on the Range<\/a> \u2013 What is the difference between a bird\u2019s territory and its range? Through research and role-playing, kids will learn about some of the birds in their community.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/say-it-with-a-song.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Say it With a Song<\/a> \u2013 A great way to identify birds is by their songs! Through this listening exercise, kids can learn local birdsongs and understand their meanings.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/migrators.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Migrators<\/a> \u2013 Through this fun mapping activity, kids will learn why many birds migrate in the winter, then trace their migratory routes.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/for-educators\/lesson-plans\/are-we-disturbing-birds.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Are We Disturbing Birds?<\/a> \u2013 Kids will identify some things affecting local birds in their community and brainstorm ways to address or improve these issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"do\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Do<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-standard wp-image-7515\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/female-bluebird-nest-bird-house-989639214-1100x640.jpg\" alt=\"female bluebird bird house\" width=\"1100\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While birds are some of the most watched and beloved of Canada&#8217;s wildlife species, over 25 per cent of native bird species are declining rapidly \u2013 especially shorebirds, grassland birds and aerial insectivores (birds that eat insects while in the air).<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, there are simple things you can do to have a positive impact on birds and help reduce population decline. We hope these simple activities help inspire you to embark on a backyard birding expedition with your family!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Go outside<\/strong> and close your eyes \u2013 listen for bird sounds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Collect<\/strong> twigs, grass and leaves to build your own bird\u2019s nest!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pretend<\/strong> you are a bird in the sky.
