{"id":5093,"date":"2018-08-13T17:06:46","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T17:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/?p=5093"},"modified":"2018-08-23T14:52:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-23T14:52:53","slug":"giving-turtles-a-chance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/giving-turtles-a-chance\/","title":{"rendered":"Rescued At-Risk Turtle Eggs Are Now Hatching!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Our Turtle Eggs Are Hatching!<\/h2>\n<p>This summer, our Conservation Science team has been conducting field work on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.banwithaplan.org\/?src=blog\">pollinators<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore-our-work\/lakes-rivers\/overcoming-barriers.html?src=blog\">eels<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/?s=bats\">bats<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore-our-work\/endangered-species\/help-the-turtles\/?src=blog\">turtles<\/a> (to name only a few projects!).<\/p>\n<p>Added to the regular turtle surveying, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/weve-got-turtle-eggs\/\">our team collected the eggs of at-risk turtles<\/a> (Blanding\u2019s and Snapping) laid along roadsides.\u00a0Roadsides may <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/turtle-nesting-season\/\">seem suitable to turtles as they look for open areas of sand or soil to bury eggs<\/a>. Sadly, the eggs that are laid there have a high risk of being destroyed. So, our turtle team were out at all hours patiently gathering eggs once females had done their duty and left. <em>(Please don\u2019t try this at home as special permits and expertise are needed!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, many weeks later, our little turtles are hatching quickly. Once all the eggs from a nest are hatched, the young will be released together in the area they were laid\u00a0\u2014 only this time they will be a safe distance from the road!<\/p>\n<p>CWF staff and interns have been in awe of these little wonders. We continue to carry out on the ground surveys to document at-risk turtle locations and HELP PROTECT their habitat. We have also undertaken an analysis of hotspots where turtles are more susceptible to being hit on the road.
