{"id":3148,"date":"2016-12-14T16:56:41","date_gmt":"2016-12-14T16:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/?p=3148"},"modified":"2016-12-14T17:02:42","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T17:02:42","slug":"an-early-christmas-gift-for-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/an-early-christmas-gift-for-wildlife\/","title":{"rendered":"An early Christmas gift for wildlife in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>After more than 16 years of scientific study, public engagement and government review, it is fantastic news that the governments of Canada and the United States are adopting <a href=\"http:\/\/ijc.org\/greatlakesconnection\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plan 2014<\/a> to regulate water levels and flows through the Moses-Saunders Dam located on the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall, Ontario to the benefit of wildlife, navigation, and hydropower.<\/h2>\n<p>The water level rules had not been updated since the 1950s and were causing unnatural flooding and drying patterns, resulting in a decline in wetlands and other habitat and negatively affecting fish and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new plan, <a href=\"http:\/\/ijc.org\/greatlakesconnection\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plan 2014<\/a>, more natural variation in water levels will be restored to help restore 26,000 hectares of wetlands, improving habitat for wildlife.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3149\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/great-blue-heron-1100x619.jpg\" alt=\"Great Blue Heron\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/great-blue-heron-1100x619.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/great-blue-heron-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/great-blue-heron-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/great-blue-heron-530x298.jpg 530w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/great-blue-heron.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eight years ago we started voicing our concerns on the old water level regulating system, supporting a plan that would do just as Plan 2014 aims to do &#8211; return this area to a more natural regime, bringing the ecosystem back to a healthy and biologically diverse system.<\/p>\n<p>We are excited for the positive environmental changes that will ensue from Plan 2014 which is to be put into action in January 2017.
