Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment at a rate that causes adverse changes. There are many different types of pollution, such as land, air, water, noise, and light. Since this is a lot to cover, we\u2019ve focused on water pollution for this mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your mission is to reflect on why healthy waters matter, discover how we are connected to water, explore the impacts of pollution on\u00a0aquatic wildlife, and investigate\u00a0how\u00a0you can prevent pollution from making its way into our waterways and oceans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Part 1: Reflect on Why Healthy Waters Matter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15006 size-standard\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GettyImages-1405685677-1100x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1100\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The water cycle continuously moves water between the land, atmosphere, and oceans. Water evaporates from the ocean, falls as rain, and flows into rivers and lakes. Watersheds and drainage basins direct this water back to the ocean. Regardless of whether you live on the coast or thousands of kilometres inland, the water you see in your community will eventually return to the ocean!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start by reflecting on why healthy waters matter. Follow these steps to complete a pollution audit of your home, school, or community:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Print out <a href=\"https:\/\/education.cwf-fcf.org\/library\/resources\/get\/285942\/Pollution%20Potential.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this Pollution Potential Pollution Potential<\/a>\u00a0 table <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and distribute to learners. You can do this activity in small groups or one large group.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tour your home, school, or community and fill out the table with potential sources of water pollution. Record the pollution source, the impact it could have on people and wildlife if it reaches a waterway, and ideas about how to prevent it becoming a source of water pollution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sort the sources of pollution you found into categories, such as chemicals, litter, sewage and wastewater, light, noise, thermal, and natural processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss your findings with others and brainstorm some ways that you can prevent pollution from travelling from your community to oceans, lakes, or rivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick 1 or 2 ideas and put them into action together!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some ideas to get you started:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use water responsibly and conserve it where you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organize a shoreline cleanup in your community. <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/resources\/DIY\/outside\/shoreline-cleanup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here is a helpful guide!<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit your municipal website or recycling center to learn how to safely dispose of household items that are harmful to the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate and learn about oceans, lakes, and rivers with <a href=\"https:\/\/education.cwf-fcf.org\/library\/resources\/get\/234661\/CWF%20Rivers%20to%20Oceans%20Bingo%20Sheet.pdf\">Rivers to Oceans Bingo<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Environmental Education Day is celebrated on January 26 each year and is an opportunity to raise awareness among young people about the role they can play in protecting our planet. Consider sharing photos and stories from the actions you took during this mission with your school or community \u2014 perhaps a presentation at your school or an article in your local newspaper. Sharing your stories is a great way to inspire others to help protect our planet and celebrate International Environmental Education Day!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also support Canada\u2019s aquatic wildlife and habitats by adopting one of our beluga whale stuffies. Predators like beluga whales are near the top of the food chain, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/discover\/news\/2021\/november\/arctic-whales-may-be-consuming-thousands-of-microplastics-a-year.html\">contaminants and microplastics<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0tend to accumulate in their bodies as they consume smaller organisms that have already been affected. This is called bioaccumulation. This makes them especially vulnerable to the cumulative impacts of pollution.
