{"id":14201,"date":"2024-07-12T14:45:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T14:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/?p=14201"},"modified":"2024-07-19T14:00:05","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T14:00:05","slug":"is-freshwater-fish-safe-to-eat-anymore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/is-freshwater-fish-safe-to-eat-anymore\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Freshwater Fish Safe to Eat Anymore?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Recent research published in the journal Environmental Research has revealed alarming findings.<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cConsuming just one freshwater fish from a U.S. lake or river is equivalent to drinking chemically contaminated water for an entire month.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yikes!<\/p>\n<p>So, what exactly are these dangerous chemicals and how did they end up in our waterways?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/trout-1100x619.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re called PFAS \u2013 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. These <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/ditch-the-pesticides-to-save-our-waters\/\">chemicals<\/a> were first developed in the 1940s and are prevalent in products like non-stick cookware and food packaging. Unfortunately, these chemicals are incredibly resilient and hard to break down. More and more of these chemicals are being found in our environment, including our freshwater sources. Naturally this has impacts on the health of our waters, the wildlife that live in them and the animals that consume those wildlife \u2013 including us.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2013 and 2015, researchers analyzed 500 water samples from a variety of rivers and lakes across the United States. Shockingly, about 75 per cent of the chemicals found in those samples were PFOAS, a common type of PFAS. The result? Freshwater fish are ingesting these harmful substances at alarming rates, with PFAS levels in these fish found to be 278 times higher than those in commercially sold fish.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What About Canada? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Before Canadians breathe a sigh of relief, it\u2019s critical to recognize that PFAS contamination is not just a U.S. issue. Health Canada has reported significant PFAS levels in Canada\u2019s freshwater as well.
