{"id":13291,"date":"2023-11-12T09:23:28","date_gmt":"2023-11-12T09:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/?p=13291"},"modified":"2023-11-10T19:34:01","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T19:34:01","slug":"celebrating-our-wildlife-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/celebrating-our-wildlife-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Our Wildlife Family"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>You and I, wildlife and their habitat, are all connected.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As the end of year approaches and we are spending more time with family, friends or on our own, it\u2019s natural that we would reflect on the past year and look forward, with hope, to the brand new year just around the corner!<\/p>\n<p>Humans, Little Brown Bats, Monarch Butterflies, Painted Turtles, North Atlantic Right Whales \u2014 we are all connected. We need each other to survive and thrive. Sadly, many of Canada\u2019s wild families are at risk of becoming endangered.<\/p>\n<p>If a member of your family needed your help, you would try to help them, wouldn\u2019t you? The Canadian Wildlife Federation strives to support members of our family, especially those that need the most help.<\/p>\n<p>We need <em>your<\/em> help to <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/donate\/giveagift\/?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conserve the most at-risk members of our family<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our wildlife family has never needed us more than they do now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only about <strong>350 North Atlantic Right Whales exist today<\/strong>, and since 2017 more than 20% of the population (121 individuals) have been killed or seriously injured by human activities, specifically fishing activity and vessel strikes.<\/li>\n<li>Since 1970, approximately <strong>3 billion breeding birds have been lost<\/strong> from Canada and the United States.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All eight species of freshwater turtles<\/strong> found in Canada are at risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10 million bats<\/strong> have died due to White-nose Syndrome<\/li>\n<li><strong>70 species are at risk<\/strong> on the Canadian plains<\/li>\n<li>The Monarch Butterfly population has <strong>declined more than 80 per cent<\/strong> in the past 20 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>One-third of the 200 freshwater fish<\/strong> in Canada are at-risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Caring For Our Families<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13295 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/framed-family-narw-sq-640x640.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/framed-family-narw-sq-640x640.png 640w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/framed-family-narw-sq-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/framed-family-narw-sq-530x530.png 530w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/framed-family-narw-sq-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/framed-family-narw-sq.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>But there is hope! When you give a gift from the Canadian Wildlife Federation, it is also a gift to other members of your family \u2014 your wildlife family.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/coasts-oceans\/?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CanFishGear<\/a> works with local fish harvesters to implement evidence-based solutions such as ropeless, or on-demand gear which allows them to continue to fish and marine mammals to live.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/grasslands\/sustainable-ranching.html?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sustainable ranching<\/a> programs support ranchers working to save native grasslands, and thus many of its at-risk species such as Burrowing Owls, through proper cattle grazing.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/fish-passage\/breaking-down-barriers.html?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BC Fish Passage Restoration Initiative<\/a> is working to restore access to critical spawning and rearing habitat for our Pacific Salmon and other species, which will in turn help the Pacific Northwest\u2019s forests, rivers and ocean.<\/li>\n<li>In just one weekend, thousands of Canadians came together to make more than <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/inaturalist\/cnc\/?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">76,000 observations on iNaturalist<\/a>, a global citizen-science platform which helps Canadian scientists and policy makers help Canadian wildlife. Currently, we are close to breaking 10 million Canadian observations!<\/li>\n<li>More than 73,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/turtles\/?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">freshwater turtle hatchlings<\/a> have been returned to the wilds of Ontario, giving these at-risk species a head start.<\/li>\n<li>In just the few years our <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/education\/?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">youth outreach programs<\/a> have been running, we\u2019ve helped more than 450 participants contribute more than 400,000 hours of volunteer service hours for conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/donate\/giveagift\/?utm_source=23292&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=eoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">give a gift<\/a> to the Canadian Wildlife Federation \u2014 be it a gift in someone\u2019s name, an adopted animal or wild magazine subscription \u2014 your money will go to helping Canada\u2019s wildlife and wild places.<\/p>\n<p>Whether a lone wolf, a close-knit pod, found family or a devoted duo, whatever type of family you connect with, know that you are part of something to celebrate.\u00a0\u00a0If a member of your family needed help, you would you help them!
