And no, we\u2019re not talking about sharks! We\u2019re talking about human activity \u2013 something far more dangerous than any large fish could ever be. From habitat destruction to urban runoff, there are a myriad of threats facing our wild species that call our rivers, oceans, lakes and more home.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the week, we\u2019ll highlight seven threats on the Rivers to Oceans Week website during those seven days and we\u2019ll encourage you to pledge to do what you can to turn the tide on these very real issues. Because you <em>can<\/em> help!<\/p>\n<h3>Issue #1: Vessel Strikes<\/h3>\n<div style=\"padding: 56.25% 0 0 0; position: relative;\">\n<div style=\"height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.wave.video\/SHlGskmHZ6MoBhPw\" width=\"100%;\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today we are focusing on how vessel strikes impact <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/right-whale\/?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Atlantic Right Whales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>North Atlantic Right Whales are not just susceptible to <a href=\"https:\/\/cwf-fcf.org\/en\/explore\/rivers-to-oceans-week\/fishing-gear.html?src=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entanglement in fishing gear<\/a>, they also face threats from vessel strikes which is the second leading cause of death and injury to this endangered species. Right Whales, with their large black bodies and lack of dorsal fin can be hard to see when out on the water, which puts them at risk of being hit by vessels transiting the same areas.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the fisheries management measures, the government of Canada has also implemented large scale management schemes aimed at reducing vessel speeds and rerouting vessels in the areas where right whales aggregate in Canadian waters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/whale-tale-shipping-boat-ocean-collision.jpg\" alt=\"commercial ship\" \/>The Canadian Wildlife Federation is using a tool they made to figure out how deadly a hit from different types of boats could be for whales. They want to see if these new rules are working to stop boats from hitting whales.<\/p>\n<p>For example, thus far we\u2019ve learned that both big and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/collision-course-small-vessel-impact-north-atlantic-right-whales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">small vessels<\/a> can inflict injury!<\/p>\n<p>Big ships like cruise and cargo ships can hurt and kill whales because of their huge size and how fast they can go. These ships cause the most serious injuries to whales.<\/p>\n<p>Even smaller fishing boats (smaller than 20 metres in length) can also accidentally hit whales, even though they don&#8217;t usually go very fast (they usually travel under 10 knots).
