Spring is on the horizon. If you forgot to clean out the nest boxes in your backyard at the end of autumn, early spring is another great time to get this task done.<\/p>\n<p>Before you get started, it\u2019s important that you check to make sure the box isn\u2019t currently occupied. Depending on where you live in Canada, it\u2019s doubtful that any birds are starting to nest this early but critters like mice, squirrels or birds might be using it to roost. If there are no signs of occupation, you can go ahead and get cleaning!<\/p>\n<p>What You\u2019ll Need<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rubber gloves<\/li>\n<li>A scrub brush<\/li>\n<li>Mild detergent<\/li>\n<li>Bleach<\/li>\n<li>Hot water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you can take the box down, it\u2019ll be easier to clean.<\/li>\n<li>Pop on your rubber gloves and start removing old nesting material and throwing the material in the compost.<\/li>\n<li>Start with some good ol\u2019 fashioned elbow work and scrub the inside with your scrub brush, detergent and water.<\/li>\n<li>It might be helpful to use a hose to get rid of stubborn debris.<\/li>\n<li>If you notice fecal matter, you\u2019ll want to scrub the box clean with a cleaning mix using one part bleach to 10 parts water.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to use lots of hot water to thoroughly rinse away any detergent or bleach residue afterwards!<\/li>\n<li>Go ahead and leave the box out in the sun to let it dry out.
