{"id":1171,"date":"2012-06-26T18:55:29","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T18:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/?p=1171"},"modified":"2016-11-03T20:04:32","modified_gmt":"2016-11-03T20:04:32","slug":"white-nose-syndrome-what-it-means-for-new-brunswicks-bats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.cwf-fcf.org\/index.php\/en\/white-nose-syndrome-what-it-means-for-new-brunswicks-bats\/","title":{"rendered":"White-Nose Syndrome: What It Means For New Brunswick&#8217;s Bats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The conclusion from our last field season is that White-nose Syndrome (WNS) is spreading rapidly in New Brunswick.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we finished our final cave visits in April, 9 of the province\u2019s 11 caves that we visited were visibly infected (3 of the \u2018caves\u2019 are actually abandoned mines). Of the 2 that looked clean, one has never had a bat in it, at least to our knowledge, and the other cave actually tested positive for <em>Geomyces destructans<\/em>, the fungus that causes WNS, from the swabs I took from bats in the cave.<\/p>\n<p>According to my estimates, a minimum of 6,300 bats have died in New Brunswick because of WNS since it was first discovered in the province in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Our work continues to focus on looking at the culture samples we took from the caves.
